Types of Rosacea

There are four subtypes of rosacea and it’s possible to have more than one type at a time but each one requires a different treatment. They are as follows.

Subtype 1

This involves facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Visibly broken blood vessels (spider veins)
  • Swollen skin
  • The skin may be very sensitive, sting or burn
  • Flushing and redness in the center of the face
  • Dry, rough, or scaling skin
  • A tendency to flush/blush more easily than other people

Subtype 2

Acne rosacea is very common in middle-aged women and involves acne-like breakouts. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Acne-like breakouts, typically where the skin is very red
  • Raised patches of skin called plaques
  • Acne-like breakouts that come and go
  • Visibly broken blood vessels
  • Oily skin
  • Skin that is sensitive and may burn or sting

Subtype 3

This rare type of rosacea causes the skin to thicken become bumpy. Symptoms include:

  • Oily skin
  • Pores that look large
  • Bumpy texture to the skin
  • Visibly broken blood vessels
  • Skin begins to thicken (particularly common on the nose)
  • The skin may thicken on the forehead, chin, cheeks, and ears

Subtype 4

Ocular rosacea affects the eyes. The eyes may have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Feel gritty
  • Eyes burn, itch or sting
  • Watery or bloodshot eyes
  • Cyst on the eyelid
  • Very dry eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Visibly broken blood vessels on an eyelid
