Bactrim

What is Bactrim?

Bactrim, also known as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, is an oral antibiotic.

What Does Bactrim Treat?

Acne can be caused by many things, from hormones and excessive oil production to bacteria and irregular shedding of the skin. Bactrim targets the growth of bacteria and reduces the inflamed and infected hair follicles that cause moderate to severe acne.

Acne affects between 40-50 million Americans, making it the most common skin condition in the US. It is painful, frustrating, and plays a large role in lowered self-esteem. Fortunately, there are many treatment options available, like Bactrim. Your dermatologist will be able to tell you if this is a good treatment option or may recommend a combination of medications and products to help you achieve the best results.

How to Use Bactrim

Bactrim is a prescription medication that is taken by mouth. Your doctor will decide the dosage and treatment time. When taken by mouth, Bactrim can prevent infection and reduce acne flare-ups. You should take this medication with food to avoid gastrointestinal upset. This includes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

For most adults, dosing instructions include one Bactrim tablet every twelve hours. One Bactrim double strength tablet includes 160 mg of trimethoprim and 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole.

Precautions

Before beginning this medication, speak to your doctor about your medical history and any medications, vitamins, herbal drugs, or dietary supplements you are taking. If you are pregnant or nursing, you should not take Bactrim. If you have allergies to sulfa drugs, you should not take this medication. Your doctor may recommend using benzoyl peroxide along with this medication to reduce the risk of developing antibiotic resistance.
